By the time I get to the board meeting, I’m in the foulest mood imaginable. Even Chance backs away when he sees the fire behind my eyes. The bunch of stuffed suits with gold rings on their fingers and bellies hanging over their belts, they don’t stand a chance.

I take my seat at the head of the table, next to my partner. Chance and I are the youngest men in the room by at least twenty years, and we’re the ones making all the money. How fucked up is that? Way down at the other end of the polished, glassy surface, I see a face I was hoping not to see again. Bruce Green. Fucking brilliant.

Fine, he’s one of our original investors, and a member of the board just like all the others. But if I were him, I’d have some pride. I wouldn’t show my face.

I’d also be more concerned for my personal safety. Mr Green and I are not best of friends. And I don’t know anyone who’d put money on dough boy Brucey in a fight.

If I could, I’d let Chance do all the talking. But I’m the golden boy when it comes to presentations, so I have to stand up and turn on the sparkle. I’m not my usual charming self. Our numbers, though, they speak for themselves today. We get a round of applause at the end. Clap, you bastards. We’re lining your pockets.

Chance reaches for my arm under the table and gives me a little punch. He’s sensed what the others haven’t. I need to calm down.

Then it’s on to the nitty gritty of business. The future direction of the company. Further investments. New offices abroad. Relationships with the big boys of technology – and there are some really big boys out there, as everyone knows. Kelsey Technologies is becoming a major player. Our products are good – that’s thanks to Chance, genius that he is. And they sell like nobody’s business. That’s all down to me.

Every idea we’ve got, though, every new scheme, every brilliant new direction, is getting smashed into the dirt from the other end of the table. It’s not always Bruce Green himself, but I know who his cronies are. They wouldn’t dare speak up against me if he weren’t here to back them. But here he is. He’s got nothing to say for himself, mind. No ideas of his own.

He just wants to see mine fail.

“The success I’ve made out of New York,” I’m saying, for what feels like the hundredth time, “clearly shows that we’re not risking anything by expanding into Seattle. There’s a huge talent pool over there that we need to tap into. It’s more cost effective to lay down roots where the talent is growing than to –”

“New York had some very rocky moments,” Bruce interrupts. He’s got a face like a bullfrog. Karen Green, though I’ve not given her face a second’s thought for many months, did well to come out as good-looking as she did, with a father like him.
